Target 4 – Engaged Community Partners. FWSU staff and students will collaborate, innovate, create and conceptualize ideas and learning with local, regional, state, and global partners to make a difference in their community, state, and world

Action step – Plan and manage instruction around problems relevant to students and their community and develop solutions for authentic audiences.

Indicator of success – Students challenge convention and make contributions in their community, state, and world.

 

This October BFA Fairfax Elementary made a school wide commitment to  help change the world they live in every day. This was accomplished by the students, staff and parent volunteers participating in the JDRF Kids Walk To Cure Diabetes. The program began with an educational assembly which had three goals. First, it informed students about type 1 and type 2 Diabetes. Second, the importance of keeping a healthy diet and how vitally important that exercise is to our health. Third, the understanding of engaging our community in the goal raising awareness for a cause and safe and effective fundraising strategies to help with this goal.

After the kick off assembly, students began to raise awareness by selling JDRF paper sneakers to friends and family. The donations were to support diabetes research. Not only did this program raised awareness and funds for Diabetes, it also helped BFA to foster an environment of positive character building and community service. Both traits are so important for our students.

On Wednesday BFA hosted, with the assistance of community volunteers,  the JDRF Walk outside on our grounds to celebrate our efforts to fundraise for this important cause.
