Earlier this week at BFA, Mrs. Breen’s 2nd Grade Class hosted the All-School Morning Meeting. The meeting is a weekly tradition which helps build community among all students across the elementary grades. Each class has an opportunity to host at least one morning meeting per school year, and Mrs. Breen’s class is scheduled to host again in early May. In addition to the usual meeting features such as the Pledge of Allegiance, Greeting, Messages, Birthdays, and other announcements, students look forward to a sharing their learning with others.
The Mrs. Breen’s class shared Partner Poems they had been practicing. The poems explained how the children read sit elbow-to-elbow or knee-to-knee (or EEKK!) when reading with a partner. By reading in this way, the children can hear each other, read along with their partner, and help each other out if they run into difficulty decoding any of the words. Reading with a partner increases fluency which supports comprehension – a key learning target for our second graders aligned with Common Core State Standards (CCSS).
Students in Mrs. Breen’s class have found that reading with a partner is twice the fun!
