As coins ‘flooded’ in for our recent coin drive to help Hurricane Sandy victims, first grade students in Mrs. Datillio’s class put their math skills to work figuring out how much money was collected. Students sorted, estimated, counted by tens, reviewed values of coins and counted (very large!) groups of coins, and tallied and added totals. Each time more coins were brought in, the class looked forward to repeating the process all over again.

Students learned the importance of a solid understanding of mathematics – how it relates to meaningful work in making a difference. For those devastated by Hurricane Sandy, math really counts!
