Geocaching is an outdoor recreational activity, in which the participants use a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver or mobile device and other navigational techniques to hide and seek containers, called “geocaches” or “caches”, anywhere in the world.  FWSU recently had a geocache placed at the office! The new FWSU cache, “GC4AZK3, FWSU” has been listed in the online geocaching community. You can see the description of the cache here.  We cannot include an image of the cache because it would spoil it for participants wanting to play the game.

Geocaching combines outdoor play with team-building, problem-solving, and other valuable educational outcomes. Geocaching takes learning outside the four walls of the classroom and allows participants to connect to the community using technology.

As warmer weather approaches, FWSU will be looking at ways to incorporate geocaching into educational activities in our classrooms. Lessons are being planned for summer learning and after-school activities.
