GEMS Honors the Brave Heroes Who Have Given Their Lives

In Julie Stevenson’s second grade classroom, reading poetry, reciting poetry, and discussing poetry is an integral part of student’s learning experience each week. Ms Stevenson says that these kinds of opportunities “build fluency and comprehension,” allowing children the opportunity to understand the deeper meaning of vocabulary words.

This week’s poem is extremely special because it is directed to families, friends, and loved ones who have served our country. In honor of Memorial Day, Ms. Stevenson’s class memorized, recited, and recorded the following poem to share with many.

Thanks to all the soldiers who have served our country. We especially remember those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice of their lives to secure the freedom we enjoy and to provide safety for our citizens.
