Target 3 – Flexible Learning Environments and Community PartnershipAction Step – Provide students w/ access to content, resources, and methods for learning beyond the school day and beyond the school walls.

4th Graders at BFA spent the morning at Green Mountain Mainlines Sugar House in Fletcher Vermont. Owner Mr. JR Sloan, a parent of a 4th grade student, gave the students a detailed tour of the large scale operation. Students learned about about forestry management, ecological responsibility, and waste management. The students were also able to apply knowledge and learning from the classroom such as erosion, weather, and Vermont economics as they apply to sugaring.
Mr. Sloan made connections for students throughout our visit regarding the importance of reading, writing, math and science. He emphasized that what we are learning in school is so important to all aspect of his business. The excursion ended with a wonderful sweet sample of his maple syrup.
Our many thanks for such a wonderful hands on learning opportunity!
