To best meet the needs of students with disabilities we must create an inclusive learning environment that provides access continuum of high-quality specialized services, including co-teaching, explicit direct instruction, and positive behavioral supports. For students with disabilities, special education services are designed to provide direct instruction, accommodations, and modifications in order to reduce barriers for those who are diagnosed with disabilities. The focus must be on what supports are necessary to arrange learning and teaching so that all students benefit.

Special education professional Gretchen Walsh M.S. Ed., who runs the Academic Support Center at Notre Dame College, gives a concise synopsis when she says:

“Inclusion is important because through our diversity we certainly add to our creativity. If you don’t have a diverse classroom or a diverse world, you don’t have the same creative levels and I think our strength lies in our diversity.”

At Franklin West Supervisory Union, we are driven by a belief in what is possible for every student. We embrace each student’s unique talents and strengths and are committed to creating a supportive, inclusive learning environment. We strive to create an inclusive educational system that promotes high expectations and creates authentic learning opportunities along with targeted intervention so all students can reach their full potential.
