The positive energy was great yesterday at Fletcher Elementary’s inservice after Melissa Sargent-Minor shared a traditional Thai string-tying ceremony called Bai Sri Su Kwan with faculty and staff. Melissa served as a FWSU Visiting Scholar this summer in Thailand sponsored by the UVM Asian Studies Program. The program enhances teachers’ knowledge of Asian cultures and helps bring that information to our schools and communities.
One by one, each Fletcher staff member tied a cloth string around the wrist of someone else, so that by the end of ceremony all wrists were bound in friendship and hospitality. The string bracelets are meant to be kept on for at least three days to benefit from the good luck bestowed. We can’t wait to learn more about Melissa’s experience in Southeast Asia this past summer!
