Back in early September the new FWSU Evaluation Committee was formed. The basis for the formation of the group was in response to the FWSU Board of Directors asking for a comprehensive review of our teacher evaluation model. They charged the administration to make adjustments or revisions where necessary with a focus on measuring student growth and student outcomes.
The committee was formed and a team of educators and administrators from all schools in FWSU began its task. The committee is comprised of the following individuals – Bev Briggs (FES), Janet E. Cerro (FES), Karen Garrett (GEMS), Phil Gulizio (GEMS), Melinda Carpenter (BFA), Tracey Godin (FES), Tom Walsh (BFA), Mary Lynn Riggs (FWSU), Rachelle LeVau (BFA/FWSU Board) and Ned Kirsch (FWSU).
Over the past 5 months, the committee has met consistently and is drafting a document to present to the FWSU Board this spring. The new evaluation system will be ready for implementation for the 2013/2014 school year.
Much has been written recently regarding teacher effectiveness and evaluation. Throughout their work, the committee has stayed as up-to-date as possible on the current research. The committee has studied the work of Robert Marzano, Charlotte Danielson, Kim Marshall, and many other noted educational researchers. Here are a few of the resources that have shaped the process and informed the committee’s decisions along the way:
- Ensuring Fair and Reliable Measures of Effective Teaching
- Vermont Guidelines for Teacher & Leader Effectiveness
- An examination of performance-based teacher evaluation systems in five states
- Evaluating teacher evaluation
The next meeting is scheduled for early February. If you have any questions about this important work, please feel free to ask any member of the committee.
