BFA Fairfax 6th Grade Science classes were pleased to have IBM engineers Callie Chapman (Fairfax alumni) and Tom Chadwick visit during IBM Engineering Week. The visit was part of the wind energy unit. BFA’s 5th Grade also recently benefited from this program.
Students designed and created miniature wind turbines and measured the voltage results in millivolts.
Construction considerations and alterations involved blade angle, number, and length, as well as rotational symmetry.
This workshop allowed students to explore optimization and problem-solving by designing, testing, and improving a model.
These kinds of learning opportunities build students’ design and engineering skills and are part of FWSU’s overall emphasis on science, math, and technology (STEM).
Congratulations to these young engineers!

Nice job, sixth grade!
