First graders at Fletcher Elementary School are excited about learning to create their first blog! The blog will be launched soon – right now students are working with teachers to understand the mechanics of starting a blog for the first time.
Our youngest students live in a digital world and love the iPad! They naturally express their thoughts in integrated ways – it is not unusual to see young children capture photos or a screenshot of their own drawings to tell a story!
Children are very comfortable moving seamlessly from adding artistic touches to stock photos, writing about their own fictional characters, creating their own artwork, recording their own voices, and discovering the voice distortion settings to add flair! This is connected learning and children have boundless imaginations!
Through blogging, young children build on these key elements of play and begin to learn to use writing conventions and ways to share their ideas with others. The blog provides adults with a window into a child’s thinking and writing development. Students come to see their blog as a tool to reach an authentic audience beyond their classroom.
