Each year, a team of BFA Elementary School students, parents, and staff members participate in the Annual Penguin Plunge in Burlington. The plunge is held in mid-February and is one of the best winter events held in Burlington. Seeing hundreds of people jumping into a freezing cold lake for a great cause is an amazing experience!
The event is a fundraiser for the Vermont Special Olympics. This year BFA’s goal was to engage more staff in raising money and awareness. Leading the charge were educators Cindy Anderson and Heather Weeks. Both are coaches of the BFA Elementary Snowshoeing team who participate annually in the Penguin Plunge.
How did they achieve their goal? This year they created a challenge where teachers volunteered to participate in a contest. The “contest” created cash buckets with each teachers name where anyone could donate money. The teacher receiving the most money in their bucket would jump in Lake Champlain.
The participants were: Lisa Sweet, Stephanie Boutin, Katie Haddock, Victoria Minor, Andrea Farrar, Vicki Pinault, Jen Gomo
Katie Haddock was the Winner!!! She will join the rest of the Penguin Plunge participants in Burlington. Most importantly, the school raised $922 – and counting!!!.
Check back in a few weeks for pictures from our staff jumping in the ice-cold lake! If you would like to donate, please contact Principal Tom Walsh.
