Last Friday, first graders at BFA continued their unit on the day/night sky and began with with a story: “What Do You Do With An Idea?” by Kobi Yamada
The students did a S’mores Challenge that asked, “I wonder if you can create a solar oven that could melt chocolate & marshmallows onto a graham cracker?”
Students then began to imagine and collaborated with teams, brainstormed ideas, and then shared with the group. Next, the children began planning.
Each student drew a detailed. labeled diagram of the group’s chosen idea.
Then the classmates went to work on creating the final product. They went outside to assemble the s’mores and place them into ovens.
15 minutes later, the students checked their ovens and the s’mores were ready to eat!
The students then discussed their observations about which ovens worked best and why, and what improvements they might make next time. Students enjoyed the delicious results of their investigation into solar s’mores!
