This winter, BFA Fairfax participated in the Music-COMP Opus 36 music composition program for the first time. Through this program, students try their hand at composing with guidance from a mentor composer.  Student composers are required to follow guidelines regarding what instruments they may use, length of the piece, and number of revisions they must complete.

Twenty-five original pieces were ultimately chosen out of all student submissions from around Vermont and New Hampshire.  These pieces will be performed and premiered by professional musicians from the Vermont Symphony Orchestra, TURNmusic, and others, at St. Paul’s Cathedral in Burlington on April 26th, 2022.  Composing workshops will also be offered for students throughout the day, followed by the culminating “world premiere” of the selected pieces. The concert will be broadcast on LCATV, with some of the works being played on Vermont Public Radio in the future.

We are so proud to share that BFA Fairfax had one of its student compositions chosen for this special honor. Alden Kalbfleisch’s piano piece, “Liquid Tree” was selected for the performance and premiere!  Alden is a sophomore and participates in Chamber Choir, Concert Choir, Jazz Band and Concert Band.  We are so excited to hear the world premiere of his piece and look forward to Alden’s future musical accomplishments. Congratulations, Alden!
