During the second quarter, BFA High School students began creating stories in Mr. Choiniere’s Introduction to Animation class. The stories were not only stories, they actually were the screenplays which later be turned into movies. The students worked out their stories collaboratively and used the concept of storyboarding – just like movie directors!
Next came lots of brainstorming to simplify the ideas into camera angles, scenes, and sound. The students used technology to transform their stories into animations. iMacs allowed students to manipulate frame capture and movie editing software, skills used in the communication and advertising industry on a daily basis.
Students learned that it takes fifteen frames of imagery to create one second of animation. The animators final portfolios exhibited five different techniques: cut paper, stop motion, flipbook, Flash, and Pivot. At the end of the quarter, all of the movies were shared with the school community on the television in the main lobby of the high school.
It was like a movie festival event! Here are a few animation examples that were created.
